'To watch something in person?' investigated autonomy, labour, boundaries, and (freedom of) movement. It questioned how much agency the audience possessed in the face of the artist’s will

To watch something in person?

“To watch something in person?” explored the agency of the audience in the face of choices made by the artist. Centering on themes of enclosure, participation, and choice-making, the artist engaged the audience, inviting them to decide the outcome of the performance. This performance was a continuation of Vea’s recent explorations in physical endurance, labor, audience interaction, and the intersection of Tongan genealogies with building. It also delved into the politics of class and cultural identification, especially concerning Pacific peoples in Aotearoa. The event was a highlight of the PAWA 2023 Opening Night.
