I SEE ME SEE YOU SEE ME SEE ME

Where do we draw the line between interior and exterior experience given that we’re not isolated entities? What happens to our movement, when we’re being watched? What do you see? How do you see me? Is there a performance without an audience and what is a somatic experience in public? Where do we find moments of revelation?
These were the questions asked as a part of Somatic Incubators workshop that was divided into two parts:
Part 1. I see me
An exploration of Somatic Dance and Movement practices inspired by Authentic Movement, Contact Improvisation and Butoh open us up to sensing into our bodies, finding joy in our movement without judgment or aiming for a result.
Part 2. I see me see you see me see me
Looking at the external, the public, followed by an exploration of the interplay of internal experiencing and giving form in the external. (I reveal myself to me, so I know who is watching you watching what I give form to.)
The Somatic Incubator is a collective based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington. They host a weekly somatic movement class drawing from approaches such as Contact Improvisation, Contemporary Dance, Clowning and Performance Art. They invite guest artists to run workshops and create opportunities for movement research and performance. They consider dance to be more than just a form of artistic expression: It’s a way to engage with the world, to relate to oneself and to the living environment, it’s a tool of liberation and of political protest. Somatic Incubator co-create spaces to build community through the practice of somatic movement which we see as essential for healthy, sustainable and resilient societies in a world of transition.
