Alan Schacher
born Sydney 1952, lives in The Blue Mountains, NSW (Dharug and Gundungurra Country), Australia.
Alan is a performance artist and creator working across body-based practice and installation, from a background in dance and contemporary performance. His interests and themes extend into architecture, the essence of site, materiality and the body’s inheritances. A central concern proposes diaspora as a global condition calling to question notions of home-land. His works conjure imaginary histories and rituals of and for place and time. He employs materials and objects, collaboration and improvisation as primary methods. Historically he was founder of Sydney performance ensembles Gravity Feed (1992-2004) and Gravity Research Institute (2000-2019).
His current projects are mostly solo, including participation in performance art festivals in Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Thailand, China, Germany, Taiwan and Bangladesh.
He has been commissioned by Cementa Festival (Kandos, NSW) and Bundanon Trust (Nowra NSW). He also collaborates with WeiZen Ho, just returning from their project Memory Walks II in Indonesia 2026. They also performed for the Keir Choreographic Award 2022.
